What this highlights is that anyone with anything of value has to reassess security, not just small museums but each and every one of us. Thieves come in all shapes and sizes. Some are chancers, some come in the dark of night and some are from the Government.

Many years ago I mentioned to a neighbour that the age of Conspicuous Consumption was coming to an end and we would enter an age of Conspicuous Poverty. It took longer than I thought, but we are here now.

Keep you wallet empty. Keep your suit frayed. Keep your shoes worn. Keep your car old. And keep your mouth shut. So don't boast to friends and colleagues of your investments and definitely don't post pictures of yourself with 15Kg silver bars.

Think of it as a personal financial variation on 'Pretend to be a Pig in Order to Eat the Tiger', though it's more about making yourself an unappealing meal to other tigers than anything else. After all, the tigers will still prowl but you are less likely to be considered a meal.

Looting gold silver emptying our human history and heritage... Very sad...

We had two bank (gold) heists in Germany recently.... one was a vault broke into underground from an underground parking garage.... the thieves had tons of time and opened shitloads of safety deposit boxes. Apparently a lot of gold is missing.... 😐

I need to upgrade my security system.

Th irony is that the artifacts of this museum survived being pillaged by Nazi occupiers only to be looted by, most likely, their own people.

Thanks for the article. I’m glad I asked Aunt Betsy to leave me her mustard pot when she passes. And here the rest of the family thought I was dumb for asking 🥴

It's so disturbing that these priceless pieces of antiquity, of unparalleled craftsmanship, will be melted down for their silver content. The government should offer the thieves a reward for their return, no questions asked, equal to the melt value and get back to protecting these beautiful works of art with security befitting their true value before they are lost forever.

If each guy carried about 70lbs of loot they got roughly US$200k.
