UBS: When new energy meets old wires
In a world where exciting infrastructure technologies are becoming more efficient and innovative, the U.S. electric grid remains objectively ancient. Much of the grid was built in the 1960s and 1970s1 , and it is struggling to keep up with the rapid growth of renewable energy. Investments in transmission lines have lagged behind investments in renewables in recent years (see Figure 1), resulting in congestion and inefficiencies across the entire system.
